In this cross-sectional study, we used a retrospective chart review of all patients who underwent surgical muscle repair between 2007 and 2017 at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Victoria, Australia. This study was carried out in a tertiary centre, with a general population of 40–65 years and a total of 3900 patients enrolled.
In this study, we found that patients with muscle spasticity had significantly higher rates of side effects as compared to patients with other causes of muscle spasticity (P <.001).
The rates of side effects were higher in the patients with muscle spasticity (P <.001) but were comparable between the groups of patients with other causes of muscle spasticity (P <.001).
Baclofen can be an effective option in patients with muscle spasticity. The risk of side effects is lower in patients with muscle spasticity and is consistent with the overall risk of serious muscle damage. However, in patients with other causes of muscle spasticity, the risk of side effects is higher.
